Shakopee wrestling rolls to another title

Another tournament and another championship for the Shakopee wrestling team.

The Sabers improved 9-0 on the season as they rolled to the title at the Woodbury Duals this past weekend at Woodbury High School.

"We wrestled well," head coach Jim Jackson said. "We clicked and wrestled really well."

Shakopee, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A, defeated the No. 8 ranked Anoka Tornadoes in the championship match.

To get to the finals, Shakopee defeated Annandale-Maple Lake in the quarterfinals and Rochester Mayo in the semifinals.

The championship match against Anoka was all Shakopee as they rolled to the title with a convincing 57-6 win against the Tornadoes.

Shakopee won the first eight matches against Anoka to jump out to a 31-0 lead. After losing at 160 pounds, Shakopee won the final five matches.

Pierson Manville got the match started on the right foot for the Sabers with a 17-2 technical fall at 106 pounds.

Paxton Creese followed with a technical fall of his own at 113 pounds for a 10-0 lead. AJ Smith earned a pin at 120 and the rout was on.

Also winning the championship match for Shakopee was Seth Bakken, Tyler Jones, Cole Malone, Sam Treml, Brandon Kidd, DJ Smith, Connor Raines, Jack Casey, Joey Johnson and Tommy Johnson.

Shakopee started the dual meet tournament with a 66-6 win against Annandale-Maple Lake and a 62-17 win against Mayo.

Prior to winning the tournament, Shakopee defeated Rosemount 73-6 last Thursday at Shakopee High School.

Its a big couple of weeks for the Sabers as they will face the best the state of Minnesota, the midwest and the country has to offer in the next month.

This weekend they will be on Rochester for the 32nd annual Minnesota Christmas Tournament on Friday at Saturday.

That tournament will feature the Sabers along with No. 2 ranked Apple Valley, No. 3 ranked Owatonna, No. 4 St. Michael-Albertville along with Class 2A's No. 1 Kasson-Mantorville, No. 2 Simley, No. 3 Fairmont and No. 5 Scott West.

In addition to those teams, the No. 1 ranked team from Illinois and Wisconsin will also be there.
