Shakopee wrestling beats Valley
Shakopee and Apple Valley put on another great show for wrestling fans.
The Sabers won its third straight dual meet against the Eagles as they won the South Suburban Conference dual meet 35-32 Thursday at Apple Valley High School.
The match went about as expected as the Sabers came flying out of the gate and won the first five matches. Valley responded with six straight wins of its own and the match came down to the final matches.
Shakopee won two of those final three matches to earn the victory against Apple Valley.
As expected the match started with the Sabers controlling the first five matches and jumping out to a 26-0 lead.
Evan Bruckner put the Sabers up 3-0 when he defeated Austin Laudenbach 13-9 at 106 pounds.
Shakopee followed with bonus points in the next four matches.
Pierson Manville started the bonus point train for the Sabers with a pin at 113. Valley forfeited to Paxton Creese at 120. That was followed by a pin by Ben Lunn at 126 pounds.
Tyler Jones finished off Shakopee's win streak with a 16-1 technical fall at 132 pounds, putting the Sabers up 26-0.
That's when Valley responded with a bonus point, win streak of its own.
Shakopee won six straight matches, earning bonus points in four matches, to tie the match at 26-26.
Adam Mickelson and Sebas Swiggum earned pins for Valley. That was followed by major decisions by Brady Gross and Dylan Anderson to put the score at 26-20 after the 160-pound match.
The next two matches at 170 and 182 where extremely close and both went Valley's way.
At 170 pounds, Devin Roberts outlasted Connor Raines as Roberts won 3-2 in the ultimate tiebreaker in overtime.
At 182 pounds, Micheal Mattison defeated Jack Casey 8-7 to tie the match at 26-26.
Joey Johnson put the Sabers up 32-26 with a first period pin of Joey Anderson.
The match came down to 220 pounds with Shakopee sending out Tommy Johnson and Valley Tony Anger.
In a tight match, Johnson earned the 1-0 win when his second period escape held up as the only points earned the match.
That match came right down to the wire, Anger had taken down Johnson at the end of the match but couldn't get control of the takedown until just after the final buzzer sounded.
That win put the score at an insurmountable 35-26 with one match left.
Valley's Tyler Kim finished the match off with a pin at heavyweight to put the final score at 35-32.
Shakopee has now won three straight and four out of the last five matches against Apple Valley.
The two teams will probably meet up again in a month for the Class 3A, Section 2 title.
If that match does happen, the teams will probably have different lineups as both teams were shorthanded for this SSC dual meet.
Shakopee was missing AJ Smith, Sam Treml, Carson Manville and DJ Smith while Valley was without Martin Stewart, Regan Schrempp and Hunter Aceret.
Manville is out with a broken hand and was ranked No. 1 at the time of his injury. No word if he will be able to wrestle again this season or not.
For Valley, Stewart is ranked No. 9 at 120 and Schrempp is ranked second at 126.
